Shaheed Benazirabad (Nawabshah)



Nawabshah is a city and district of Sindh province with the area 4618 Sq Km and has a population of 279,688 (2017 Census).
Syed Nawab Shah, son of Syed Nawaz Ali Shah, who migrated from the Sann, district Dadu to Nawabshah with his family in 1881. He donated 200 acres of land for a railway station to the British government in 1912. In his honour, the British government named this area as “Nawabshah”. At the establishment of district, it was consisting of seven talukas i.e Kandiaro, Naushero Feroze, Moro, Sakrand, Nawabshah, Sinjhoro, Shahdadpur.
In 1953, Sinjhoro and Shahdadpur became part of newly established district Sanghar, while in 1989, another part of the district (the talukas of Naushahro Feroze, Kandiaro and half of the Taluka Moro) were cleaved out to form the new Naushahro Feroze District. The district was renamed in September 2008 when most of PPP’s MPAs of Nawabshah demanded renaming of district in honour to the late party leader Benazir Bhutto. Renaming of the district was criticized by family of Syed Nawabshah and others who, while saddened at the death of Bhutto, felt that Nawabshah was a historic district and ought to have kept its name. Presently, the district is has four talukas i.e Sakrand, Nawabshah, Qazi Ahmed & Daur.  In 2011, it was formed administratively as Division with three districts i.e Naushahro Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad & Sanghar.  
According to Census 1998, the population of district was 1,102,584 however, as per the 2017 census current population of district Shaheed Benazirabad is 1,612,847 with 1,123,510 rural settled (69.66%). Average annual growth rate of the district is 2.02%.  94% of the total population consists of Muslims, whereas 4.2% consists of Hindus.  
District Shaheed Benazirabad is ranked at the 125th position in the education score index of the Pakistan District Education Rankings 2017. Low learning outcome issues remain a hindrance for district Shaheed Benazirabad. The city has various education institutions including universities and colleges.
It is set in a lush agricultural region, and is famous for its sugarcane, mango and banana production. Many oil and sugar mills are also located in the area.
